Miconia explicita
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Miconia explicita faces severe pressure from ongoing deforestation and habitat fragmentation across its limited range in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Agricultural expansion, particularly cattle ranching and sugarcane cultivation, continues to reduce and isolate remaining forest patches where this endemic shrub occurs. Urban development and infrastructure projects further fragment its already restricted habitat, while the species' apparent narrow ecological requirements make it particularly vulnerable to these landscape-level changes.
Habitat
This endemic Brazilian shrub inhabits the understory and edges of Atlantic Forest remnants, typically occurring in humid montane and submontane forests between 400-1200 meters elevation. It appears to favor areas with well-drained soils and partial canopy cover, often found along forest margins and in secondary growth areas adjacent to primary forest.
