Blakea steyermarkii
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Blakea steyermarkii faces severe threats from deforestation and habitat conversion in Venezuela's tepui regions, where its extremely limited range makes it vulnerable to any disturbance. Mining activities and infrastructure development pose additional pressures on its fragmented cloud forest habitat. The species' restricted distribution to a few mountaintop locations means that local environmental changes or human activities could rapidly drive it toward extinction.
Habitat
This endemic shrub inhabits cloud forests and montane vegetation on the tepuis (table mountains) of the Guiana Highlands in Venezuela. It occurs at elevations between 1,500-2,500 meters in humid, mist-shrouded environments with specialized soils and microclimates unique to these ancient geological formations.
