Overview

Megascolides australis is an exceptionally large annelid, with adults commonly reaching one to two metres in length when fully extended, though the body itself is much shorter and simply elongates under muscular pressure. Its skin is bluish-purple and its movements underground produce a distinctive gurgling sound as it travels through water-saturated burrow systems. Like other earthworms, it processes soil and organic matter as it moves, contributing to nutrient cycling, aeration, and drainage within its burrows, which can extend several metres deep into the earth.

The species is restricted entirely to a small region of South Gippsland in Victoria, Australia, where it inhabits the moist, blue-grey clay soils along creek banks and in gullies. It depends on stable, undisturbed subterranean conditions and permanently damp soil, making it highly sensitive to changes in surface land use.
