Macrozamia humilis
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Macrozamia humilis faces severe population decline due to its extremely restricted range in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, where urban development and infrastructure expansion continue to fragment its remaining habitat. The species is particularly vulnerable to frequent bushfires, which can eliminate entire subpopulations given their slow regeneration rates. Mining activities and quarrying operations pose additional threats to the limited sandstone heath communities where this cycad persists.
Habitat
This cycad is endemic to sandstone heath and woodland communities in the Blue Mountains region of New South Wales, typically growing on shallow soils over sandstone substrates at elevations between 200-800 meters. It occurs in open eucalyptus woodlands and heath shrublands with well-drained, nutrient-poor soils.
