Overview

Isopora palifera is a reef-building coral forming massive, submassive, or columnar colonies with thick, blunt branches or knobs, giving it a sturdy, weight-bearing structure distinct from the more delicate growth forms typical of many acroporids. Its surface bears small, rounded corallites, and like other stony corals it relies on symbiotic zooxanthellae for energy while extending calcium carbonate skeleton over time. As a framework-building species, it contributes to the physical structure of reefs, providing habitat complexity that supports fish and invertebrate communities.
