Ilex oblonga
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Ilex oblonga faces severe pressure from deforestation and habitat conversion throughout its limited range in the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil. The species' restricted distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to ongoing agricultural expansion and urban development, which continue to fragment and reduce the remaining forest patches where this holly occurs.
Habitat
This endemic holly species inhabits the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) of southeastern Brazil, occurring in both primary and secondary forest formations at elevations typically between 500-1,200 meters. It grows in the understory and canopy gaps of humid montane forests, particularly in areas with well-drained soils and consistent moisture levels.
