Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Horsfieldia iryaghedhi faces severe threats from rapid deforestation and habitat conversion throughout its limited range in the Western Ghats. Palm oil plantations, agricultural expansion, and urban development have fragmented the remaining lowland rainforest patches where this endemic nutmeg species occurs. The species' extremely restricted distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to localized habitat destruction, with logging activities targeting the mature forest canopy trees that provide essential growing conditions.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the tropical rainforests of the Western Ghats in India, typically found in lowland and submontane evergreen forests at elevations between 200-800 meters. It grows as an understory tree in dense, humid forest conditions with high canopy cover and rich, well-drained soils.
