Hohenbergia andina
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Hohenbergia andina faces severe pressure from agricultural expansion and cattle ranching in Colombia's Andean cloud forests, where its specialized epiphytic habitat is being systematically cleared. The species' extremely limited range makes it particularly vulnerable to localized habitat destruction, while climate change threatens to shift the narrow altitudinal zones where suitable cloud forest conditions persist.
Habitat
This bromeliad is endemic to the cloud forests of the Colombian Andes, growing as an epiphyte on trees in humid montane environments typically between 1,800-2,400 meters elevation. It requires the persistent moisture and stable temperatures characteristic of these specialized high-altitude ecosystems.
