Herrania kofanorum
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Herrania kofanorum faces severe threats from ongoing deforestation and habitat conversion in the Ecuadorian Amazon, where its extremely limited range makes it particularly vulnerable to local extinctions. Agricultural expansion and infrastructure development continue to fragment the remaining forest patches where this endemic cacao relative survives. The species' restricted distribution and specialized habitat requirements leave little room for population recovery once local populations are eliminated.
Habitat
This species inhabits humid lowland rainforests of the western Amazon basin in Ecuador, typically found in primary forest understory environments. It requires intact forest canopy and specific soil conditions characteristic of the biodiverse Chocó-Darién ecoregion.
