Overview
Ectopoglossus atopoglossus is a species of frog in the family Dendrobatidae. It is endemic to Colombia and only known from its type locality in the Cordillera Occidental, on the border between the departments of Valle del Cauca and Chocó.
Ectopoglossus atopoglossus faces severe population decline primarily due to habitat destruction from agricultural expansion and urban development in its limited range. The species' specialized breeding requirements in pristine forest streams make it particularly vulnerable to water pollution and sedimentation from nearby human activities. Climate change compounds these pressures by altering precipitation patterns and stream flow regimes essential for successful reproduction.
Habitat
This critically endangered frog inhabits pristine montane forest streams and adjacent riparian vegetation in cloud forest ecosystems. The species requires clean, fast-flowing water with specific temperature and pH ranges for breeding, typically found at elevations between 1,500-2,500 meters.
