Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Dypsis sahanofensis faces severe threats from ongoing deforestation and agricultural expansion in Madagascar's remaining lowland rainforests. The species' extremely restricted range makes it particularly vulnerable to habitat fragmentation, while slash-and-burn agriculture continues to reduce the quality of its forest habitat. Collection pressure for the horticultural trade poses an additional threat to remaining wild populations.
Habitat
This critically endangered palm is endemic to the lowland rainforests of eastern Madagascar, occurring in humid forest understory at elevations below 800 meters. It requires the specific microclimate conditions found in intact primary forest, including high humidity and filtered sunlight beneath the forest canopy.
