Overview
Bembidion pallidipenne is a small ground beetle species with a pale, yellowish-brown coloration and distinctive metallic sheen. This specialized predator plays a crucial role in coastal dune ecosystems by controlling populations of small invertebrates and contributing to nutrient cycling in sandy soils.
Bembidion pallidipenne is critically endangered due to severe habitat loss and degradation of its specialized coastal dune environments. The species faces ongoing threats from coastal development, recreational activities, and climate change impacts including sea level rise and increased storm intensity that alter its fragile sandy habitat.
Habitat
This beetle inhabits the sparse vegetation zones of coastal sand dunes, particularly areas with loose, well-drained sandy soils near marram grass and other pioneer plant communities. It requires the specific microclimate conditions found in the transition zones between bare sand and established dune vegetation.
