Overview
Adrianichthys kruyti is a critically endangered species of ricefish that is endemic to Lake Poso, Sulawesi, Indonesia. It was discovered by Max Wilhelm Carl Weber on his Siboga Expedition to Indonesia.
Adrianichthys kruyti faces severe threats from introduced species, particularly the predatory Asian arowana and other non-native fish that compete for resources and prey on juveniles. Water quality degradation from agricultural runoff and domestic pollution in Lake Poso has significantly altered the lake's ecosystem chemistry. Overfishing and destructive fishing practices have further reduced population numbers, while habitat modification from shoreline development continues to eliminate critical spawning areas.
Habitat
This endemic fish inhabits the clear, deep waters of Lake Poso in Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, preferring areas with rocky substrates and moderate water flow. The species is typically found in nearshore zones with adequate vegetation cover that provides both feeding opportunities and protection from predators.
