Dracula nosferatu
Declining
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Dracula nosferatu faces severe threats from deforestation and habitat fragmentation in its restricted cloud forest range in Ecuador. Mining activities and agricultural expansion have destroyed critical montane forest habitat, while climate change is shifting the narrow temperature and humidity conditions this orchid requires for survival.
Habitat
This epiphytic orchid inhabits cool, humid cloud forests at elevations between 1,500-2,100 meters in the Ecuadorian Andes. It grows on moss-covered tree branches in areas with consistent fog and mist, requiring very specific temperature and moisture conditions.
