Clidemia acostae
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Clidemia acostae faces severe pressure from agricultural expansion and urban development throughout its limited range in Costa Rica's montane forests. Deforestation for coffee plantations and cattle ranching has fragmented its cloud forest habitat, while climate change threatens to shift the narrow altitudinal zones where this endemic shrub can survive. The species' restricted distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to localized habitat destruction.
Habitat
This endemic shrub inhabits montane cloud forests and wet premontane forests of Costa Rica, typically occurring at elevations between 1,200-2,000 meters. It thrives in the humid, mist-shrouded environments characteristic of tropical montane ecosystems with high epiphyte diversity.
