Cleistanthus langkawiensis
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Cleistanthus langkawiensis faces severe pressure from rapid tourism development and infrastructure expansion across Langkawi Island, which has fragmented its limited forest habitat. The species' extremely restricted range makes it particularly vulnerable to habitat conversion for resort construction and road development. Additional threats include selective logging of native forest trees and potential genetic bottlenecks due to small population size.
Habitat
This endemic tree species inhabits lowland tropical rainforests and secondary forest areas on Langkawi Island, Malaysia. It typically grows in well-drained soils within mixed dipterocarp forest communities at elevations below 200 meters.
