Overview

Eucalyptus gunnii is a evergreen tree in the myrtle family, notable for its distinctive juvenile foliage: rounded, silvery-blue leaves that give way to narrower, sickle-shaped adult leaves as the tree matures. It produces small white flowers and woody, cup-shaped seed capsules typical of the genus. Its sap, once tapped and fermented by early settlers into an alcoholic drink, gives the species its common name.

Mature trees can develop a stocky, multi-stemmed form, an adaptation to repeated frost damage and cutting, and they play a role in stabilizing soils and providing habitat and forage for native fauna in the high-altitude woodlands and grasslands they occupy.

The species is restricted to Tasmania, Australia, where it grows primarily on the Central Plateau in cold, frost-prone, poorly drained sites at moderate to high elevations, often forming open woodlands or scattered stands within grazed grassland landscapes.

Its Endangered status stems from a combination of ongoing pressures. Livestock grazing has suppressed natural regeneration by removing seedlings before they can establish, while broader habitat shifting and alteration, linked to land conversion and changing vegetation patterns, has reduced available habitat. Increasingly frequent and severe droughts have added physiological stress, killing mature trees and further limiting seedling survival in an already narrow climatic niche.
