Casearia crassinervis
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Casearia crassinervis faces significant pressure from deforestation and habitat fragmentation across its limited range in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil. Agricultural expansion, particularly cattle ranching and sugarcane cultivation, has reduced its forest habitat to isolated fragments. Urban development and infrastructure projects continue to encroach on remaining populations, while selective logging targets the mature forest stands this species requires for reproduction.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Atlantic Forest (Mata Atlântica) of southeastern Brazil, where it grows in humid lowland and montane forests. It typically occurs in primary and well-developed secondary forests with dense canopy cover and rich, well-drained soils.
