Caecogobius cryptophthalmus
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Caecogobius cryptophthalmus faces severe threats from groundwater extraction and pollution in its highly restricted cave habitat in the Dinaric Alps. The species' extremely limited distribution makes it exceptionally vulnerable to any disturbance of the underground aquifer systems it depends upon. Agricultural runoff and industrial contamination pose additional risks to water quality in the karst landscape above its subterranean environment.
Habitat
This highly specialized goby inhabits underground cave systems and subterranean waters in the Dinaric karst region of southeastern Europe. The species is adapted to the perpetually dark, stable temperature conditions of deep groundwater environments within limestone cave networks.
