Brunellia almaguerensis
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Brunellia almaguerensis faces severe pressure from agricultural expansion and cattle ranching activities that have fragmented its montane forest habitat in the Colombian Andes. Deforestation for coffee cultivation and pasture development continues to reduce the species' already limited range. The species' restriction to high-elevation cloud forests makes it particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts, as warming temperatures push suitable habitat conditions upslope beyond available terrain.
Habitat
This endemic Colombian tree species inhabits montane cloud forests and humid Andean forests at elevations between 2,000-3,000 meters. It requires the persistent moisture and cool temperatures characteristic of these high-altitude ecosystems in the Cordillera Oriental.
