Overview
The bronze-winged parrot is a medium-sized pionus parrot 28 cm (11 in) long. It is a short-tailed stocky parrot found in forest and woodland in north-western South America.
The Bronze-winged Parrot faces significant pressure from ongoing deforestation and habitat fragmentation throughout its Andean range, particularly from agricultural expansion and logging activities. Additional threats include capture for the illegal pet trade and climate change impacts on montane forest ecosystems, which are reducing suitable habitat availability and quality.
Habitat
Inhabits humid montane forests, cloud forests, and forest edges in the Andes, typically occurring between 1,000-3,000 meters elevation. The species prefers dense canopy areas with abundant fruiting trees and occasionally ventures into adjacent secondary forests and cultivated areas with scattered trees.
