Overview

Growing to barely 3 centimetres in length, this diminutive freshwater fish is one of the smallest members of the galaxiid family. It displays the dark lateral banding that gives the genus its common naming conventions, with a slender, elongated body typical of galaxiids. It lacks scales, a shared trait among galaxiids, and instead has smooth skin.

Little is documented about its specific behaviour, but like related species it likely feeds on small invertebrates and zooplankton within still or slow-moving water, contributing to freshwater food webs as both predator of tiny invertebrates and prey for larger fish and aquatic birds.

The species is restricted to southwestern Australia, where it inhabits freshwater wetlands, swamps, and slow-flowing streams, often in acidic, tannin-stained waters associated with coastal plain ecosystems.

Its restricted range makes it especially vulnerable to habitat loss and degradation. Urban and housing development, along with mining and quarrying activity, have fragmented and destroyed wetland habitat.
