Overview
Achondrostoma arcasii, termed the bermejuela, is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Leuciscidae, which includes the daces. Eurasian minnows and related fishes. This species is endemic to the northern Iberian Peninsula.
The bermejuela faces significant threats from habitat degradation and water pollution in its native river systems across the Iberian Peninsula. Dam construction and water extraction have fragmented populations and altered natural flow regimes, while agricultural runoff and urban pollution continue to degrade water quality in critical spawning and feeding areas.
Habitat
Endemic to clear, well-oxygenated rivers and streams in the Duero and Tagus river basins of the Iberian Peninsula. Prefers rocky substrates and moderate to fast-flowing waters with abundant vegetation cover.
