Overview
Banksia sphaerocarpa is a woody shrub in the family Proteaceae, typically growing between one and two meters tall, though some populations can reach greater heights. It produces distinctive cylindrical flower spikes in shades ranging from golden yellow to deep orange-brown, giving rise to its characteristic globular seed follicles after flowering. Like other banksias, it plays an important ecological role as a nectar source for birds, insects, and small mammals, and its seed release is often triggered by fire, making it a key participant in fire-adapted ecosystem cycles.
The species is endemic to Western Australia, where it grows in forest and shrubland habitats, typically in sandy or gravelly soils characteristic of the southwest botanical province. Its range spans a mix of native bushland remnants interspersed with agricultural land.
Population decline is driven primarily by habitat conversion for livestock grazing and ranching, which fragments and degrades native shrubland. Expansion of annual and perennial non-timber crop agriculture further reduces available habitat. The species is also affected by Phytophthora dieback, a root-rot pathogen that spreads through susceptible plant communities in Western Australia, killing susceptible Banksia species and altering habitat structure.
Conservation efforts include monitoring of wild populations, management of Phytophthora spread through hygiene protocols on tracks and land under conservation management, and protection of remaining habitat fragments within reserves. Seed banking and ex situ propagation programs also support long-term species security.
The population trend is currently decreasing, and ongoing pressure from agricultural land use and disease make continued decline likely without sustained habitat protection and disease management. The species remains classified as Vulnerable.
