Astacopsis gouldi
Overview
Astacopsis gouldi is the largest freshwater invertebrate in the world, capable of reaching weights exceeding 5 kilograms and body lengths over 80 centimetres. As a member of the family Parastacidae, it is a freshwater crayfish with a hard exoskeleton, large chelae (claws), and a lifespan estimated to extend beyond 40 years, with slow growth and late sexual maturity. It functions as a detritivore and scavenger, breaking down submerged wood, leaf litter, and organic debris, thereby playing an important role in nutrient cycling within the river systems it inhabits.
The species is endemic to Tasmania, Australia, restricted to rivers and streams below 400 metres elevation, primarily in the northern and northwestern parts of the state. It requires cool, well-oxygenated, permanent freshwater habitats with rocky substrates, undercut banks, and woody debris for shelter.
Its decline is driven by multiple compounding pressures. Logging and forestry activities degrade riparian vegetation and increase sediment loads, while agricultural and forestry effluents reduce water quality. Dams and water management alter flow regimes essential for reproduction and movement.
Historical and illegal fishing has selectively removed large, reproductively valuable individuals, a particular concern given the species' slow maturation. Habitat alteration from land conversion to agriculture further fragments populations.
Conservation measures include legal protection under Tasmanian and Australian legislation, a complete ban on recreational and commercial fishing, riparian habitat restoration programs, and ongoing population monitoring in key catchments. Some forestry practices have been modified to protect streamside buffers.
Despite these interventions, the population trend remains decreasing. Recovery is slow due to the species' biology, and continued land-use pressures across its restricted range suggest that long-term population stability will depend on sustained habitat protection and enforcement.
This giant freshwater lobster is threatened by logging near rivers, which strips away the shady streamside forests it depends on, as well as pollution runoff from farms and forestry operations that dirties its water. It also faces pressure from dams that block its movement and alter water flow, ongoing overharvesting by fishers, and habitat disruption caused by farming activities near waterways.
