Arachnothryx calycophylla
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Arachnothryx calycophylla faces severe pressure from agricultural expansion and cattle ranching activities that have fragmented its montane forest habitat in Costa Rica. The species' restricted range makes it particularly vulnerable to localized habitat destruction, while climate change poses additional risks by altering the temperature and moisture conditions of its cloud forest environment. Urban development pressures in the Central Valley region continue to encroach upon remaining forest fragments where this endemic shrub persists.
Habitat
This endemic Costa Rican shrub inhabits montane cloud forests and humid premontane forests at elevations between 1,200-2,000 meters. It typically grows in the understory of primary and secondary forests with high humidity and consistent cloud cover.
