Admirable False Brook Salamander
Aquiloeurycea praecellens
Overview
Aquiloeurycea praecellens, also known as the admirable false brook salamander, is a species of salamander in the family Plethodontidae. It is endemic to the Sierra Madre Oriental in Veracruz, Mexico. Its natural habitat is lowland tropical moist forest where it is threatened by habitat loss.
Aquiloeurycea praecellens faces severe population decline due to extensive deforestation and agricultural conversion throughout its limited montane range in Mexico. The species' specialized habitat requirements make it extremely vulnerable to ongoing forest fragmentation, while climate change threatens to shift suitable temperature and moisture conditions beyond its narrow elevational tolerance. Pollution from agricultural runoff and urban development further degrades the pristine stream environments essential for its survival.
Habitat
This critically endangered salamander inhabits cool, humid montane cloud forests and adjacent pine-oak forests at elevations between 2,400-3,100 meters in central Mexico. It requires pristine stream environments with stable temperatures and high moisture levels, typically found near rocky outcrops and moss-covered surfaces in undisturbed forest canopy.
