Daniel's Largescale Lizard
Alopoglossus danieli
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Alopoglossus danieli faces severe threats from rapid deforestation and agricultural expansion within its extremely limited range in the Colombian Andes. Mining activities and infrastructure development have further fragmented the remaining forest patches where this endemic lizard occurs. The species' restricted distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to habitat conversion, as even small-scale land use changes can eliminate significant portions of its remaining population.
Habitat
This species inhabits montane cloud forests and humid tropical forests in the Colombian Andes, typically occurring in areas with dense canopy cover and high moisture levels. It is found in both primary forest and well-preserved secondary forest remnants at elevations between 1,500-2,500 meters.
