Overview
Acropora spathulata is a reef-building coral belonging to the family Acroporidae, one of the most diverse and ecologically significant coral genera in the world. It forms hard, calcified colonies with branching or corymbose growth patterns, providing three-dimensional structure that shelters fish, invertebrates, and other reef organisms. Like other scleractinian corals, it relies on a symbiotic relationship with photosynthetic algae (zooxanthellae) housed in its tissues, which supply the coral with energy and give it its coloration.
Colonies reproduce via broadcast spawning, releasing gametes in synchronized annual events that contribute to genetic exchange across reef systems.
This species is found across the western and southwestern Pacific, including Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands, Fiji, and New Caledonia, inhabiting shallow marine neritic waters typically associated with reef flats and slopes.
Its decline stems from a combination of pressures: destructive fishing and harvesting practices, physical damage from recreational activities, coral diseases and outbreaks of predatory species such as crown-of-thorns starfish, and pollution from urban wastewater and agricultural runoff. Habitat degradation from coastal development, sedimentation, and increasingly frequent storms and flooding events further stress colonies, compounding the effects of ocean warming and acidification.
Conservation responses include reef monitoring programs, marine protected areas across parts of its range, water quality management initiatives targeting agricultural runoff, and coral restoration efforts involving fragment propagation and outplanting. Regional cooperation among Pacific nations also supports crown-of-thorns starfish control programs.
Despite these measures, the species' population continues to decline, and it is currently classified as Endangered. Its long-term outlook remains uncertain given the cumulative and ongoing nature of the threats it faces.
This coral species faces harm from polluted runoff linked to farming and urban wastewater, damage from fishing and recreational activities like boating or diving, and pressure from invasive species and disease outbreaks. It is also vulnerable to habitat changes and destructive storms and flooding, which are expected to become more frequent and severe.
