Zanthoxylum negrilense
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Zanthoxylum negrilense faces severe pressure from habitat destruction as Jamaica's coastal dry forests are cleared for tourism development and urban expansion. The species' extremely limited range around Negril makes it particularly vulnerable to localized disturbances, while invasive plant species compete for resources in its remaining habitat fragments. Climate change poses an additional threat through altered precipitation patterns that could disrupt the delicate moisture balance required by this dry forest endemic.
Habitat
This endemic Jamaican species inhabits dry limestone forests and coastal scrublands in the Negril area of western Jamaica. It grows in well-drained calcareous soils typical of Jamaica's dry forest ecosystems, often on rocky outcrops and hillsides near the coast.
