Overview

Aldrovanda vesiculosa is a rootless, free-floating aquatic plant in the family Droseraceae, closely related to the Venus flytrap. It possesses whorls of small traps along a submerged stem that snap shut in fractions of a second to capture zooplankton, insect larvae, and other tiny aquatic invertebrates, making it one of the few carnivorous plants adapted entirely to a free-floating aquatic existence. It grows horizontally just below the water surface, extending at one end while older segments die back, and it reproduces both vegetatively through fragmentation and by producing small submerged flowers.

Within its habitat it contributes to nutrient cycling in nutrient-poor freshwater systems and serves as a micro-predator of invertebrate populations.

The species occurs in scattered, disjunct populations across parts of Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia, occupying nutrient-poor freshwater habitats such as bogs, marshes, fens, swamps, and slow-moving or still permanent waters, including some artificial water bodies.

Its decline stems from widespread habitat loss and degradation driven by urban and industrial expansion, drainage and water management projects, aquaculture, mining, agricultural effluents, and logging, all of which alter water chemistry and hydrology. Droughts and other ecosystem modifications further reduce suitable wetland habitat, and incidental capture or disturbance from trapping and hunting activities in wetland areas adds additional pressure.
