Turimiquire Collared Frog
Mannophryne leonardoi
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
The Turimiquire Collared Frog faces severe habitat degradation from agricultural expansion and coffee cultivation in Venezuela's Turimiquire massif. Its extremely restricted range, limited to cloud forest elevations between 1,200-2,000 meters, makes the species particularly vulnerable to climate-induced shifts in temperature and precipitation patterns. Deforestation for cattle ranching and subsistence farming continues to fragment the remaining suitable habitat patches.
Habitat
This species inhabits cloud forests and humid montane forests in the Turimiquire massif of northeastern Venezuela, typically found at elevations between 1,200 and 2,000 meters. It requires the cool, moist microclimate conditions characteristic of these high-elevation tropical forests.
