Tephrosia socotrana
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Tephrosia socotrana faces mounting pressure from overgrazing by introduced goats and cattle on Socotra Island, which degrades its specialized habitat and prevents natural regeneration. The species' extremely limited range makes it particularly vulnerable to habitat modification and climate-induced changes to the island's unique ecosystems. Infrastructure development and tourism expansion pose additional localized threats to remaining populations.
Habitat
This endemic legume inhabits the arid limestone plateaus and rocky slopes of Socotra Island, typically growing in sparse shrubland and semi-desert vegetation communities. It occurs at elevations ranging from sea level to approximately 500 meters, often associated with other endemic Socotran flora in areas with minimal soil development.
