Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Grallaria chthonia faces severe threats from ongoing deforestation and habitat conversion in Colombia's Andean cloud forests. Mining activities and agricultural expansion have fragmented its extremely limited range, while climate change threatens to shift suitable habitat zones upslope beyond the species' elevational limits. The species' highly restricted distribution makes it exceptionally vulnerable to any habitat disturbance within its small range.
Habitat
This antpitta inhabits humid montane cloud forests and elfin forests in the Colombian Andes, typically occurring at elevations between 2,400-3,200 meters. It requires dense understory vegetation and is associated with moss-covered trees and thick leaf litter in pristine forest conditions.
