Swartzia alagoensis
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Swartzia alagoensis faces severe pressure from ongoing deforestation and habitat fragmentation within Brazil's Atlantic Forest region. Agricultural expansion, particularly cattle ranching and sugarcane cultivation, continues to reduce the species' already limited range in Alagoas state. Urban development and infrastructure projects further fragment remaining forest patches, isolating populations and reducing genetic diversity.
Habitat
This endemic leguminous tree occurs exclusively in remnant Atlantic Forest fragments within Alagoas state, Brazil. It inhabits humid lowland and submontane forests, typically growing in well-drained soils within the highly threatened Mata Atlântica biome.
