Aneuretus simoni
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Aneuretus simoni faces severe threats from rapid deforestation and habitat fragmentation across its limited range in Sri Lanka's wet zone forests. The species' highly specialized nesting requirements and small colony sizes make it extremely vulnerable to even minor habitat disturbances. Agricultural expansion, particularly tea and rubber plantations, has eliminated much of its original forest habitat, while remaining fragments are increasingly isolated and degraded.
Habitat
Aneuretus simoni inhabits the canopy and understory of Sri Lanka's wet zone montane forests, typically at elevations between 300-1,500 meters. The species requires mature forest with dense canopy cover and is particularly associated with areas containing dead wood and hollow trees suitable for nesting.
