Speleoperipatus spelaeus
Overview
Speleoperipatus is a monospecific genus of velvet worm in the family Peripatidae, containing the single species Speleoperipatus spelaeus. This species is a pale greenish yellow, almost white, with 19 to 23 pairs of legs and no eyes. Specimens range from 27 mm to 34 mm in length.
The minimum number of leg pairs found in this species (19) is also the minimum number found in the family Peripatidae. This velvet worm is viviparous, with mothers supplying nourishment to their embryos through a placenta.
Speleoperipatus spelaeus faces severe threats from cave disturbance and habitat degradation in its extremely limited range. The species' restriction to specific cave systems makes it highly vulnerable to human activities including cave exploration, mining operations, and groundwater extraction that can alter the delicate microclimate conditions essential for its survival. Climate change poses additional risks through potential shifts in temperature and humidity regimes within its cave habitat.
Habitat
This species is endemic to specific cave systems where it inhabits the dark, humid zones with stable temperature and moisture conditions. It requires the specialized microhabitat of cave floors and walls with appropriate substrate for feeding and reproduction.
