Semper's Warbler
Leucopeza semperi
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
The Saint Lucia Warbler faces severe threats from habitat destruction as its montane forest habitat is cleared for agriculture and development. Hurricane damage has repeatedly devastated the remaining forest fragments, with major storms in recent decades causing significant population declines. Introduced predators, particularly rats and cats, prey on eggs and nestlings in the species' limited remaining range. The extremely small population size makes the species vulnerable to stochastic events and genetic bottlenecks.
Habitat
The Saint Lucia Warbler inhabits mature montane rainforest and secondary forest growth in the central mountains of Saint Lucia, particularly in areas with dense canopy cover and understory vegetation. It prefers elevations between 150-950 meters, favoring forest edges and clearings with thick vegetation for foraging and nesting.
