Sabah kapur
Dryobalanops beccarii
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Dryobalanops beccarii faces severe pressure from commercial logging operations targeting its valuable timber, which is highly prized for construction and export markets. Conversion of its lowland dipterocarp forest habitat to oil palm plantations has eliminated significant portions of its range across Sabah. The species' slow growth rate and specific soil requirements make natural regeneration extremely difficult in degraded areas.
Habitat
This endemic dipterocarp species occurs exclusively in lowland mixed dipterocarp forests of Sabah, Borneo, typically on well-drained soils at elevations below 500 meters. It requires the specific microclimate conditions of primary or minimally disturbed forest canopy to successfully establish and mature.
