Paphiopedilum victoria-regina
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Paphiopedilum victoria-regina faces severe threats from overcollection for the international orchid trade, driven by its exceptional beauty and rarity among collectors. Habitat destruction through deforestation and agricultural expansion in its limited range has further reduced available growing sites. The species' extremely slow growth rate and specialized pollination requirements make population recovery exceptionally difficult once disturbed.
Habitat
This terrestrial orchid inhabits limestone cliffs and rocky outcrops in montane forests at elevations between 1,200-1,800 meters. It grows in well-drained, alkaline soils with high humidity and filtered sunlight beneath the forest canopy.
