Scaphognathops theunensis
Overview
Scaphognathops theunensis is a species of freshwater ray-finned fish belonging to the family Cyprinidae, the family which includes the carps, barbs and related fishes. This species is classified by the IUCN as Critically Endangered, being endemic to the upper parts of the Nam Kading basin in Laos where it occurs in the middle and lower Nam Theun and the Nam Gnouang rivers. It needs flowing water and is threatened by the creation of reservoirs which have been created on the rivers this species is found in.
Scaphognathops theunensis faces severe threats from habitat destruction due to agricultural expansion and urban development in its limited range. The species' extremely restricted distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to localized environmental changes and human activities. Mining operations and infrastructure development pose additional pressures on the remaining suitable habitat patches.
Habitat
This species inhabits specialized microhabitats within tropical or subtropical regions, likely requiring specific soil conditions or vegetation types. The exact habitat requirements remain poorly documented, but the species appears to have very narrow ecological tolerances that limit its distribution.
