Ptychochromoides itasy
Overview
Ptychochromoides itasy is a species of cichlid fish from central Madagascar. Until rediscovered in a pond at a tributary of the Tsiribihina River in late 2010, it was only known from Lake Itasy where last seen in the 1970s. The reason for its extirpation from Lake Itasy was likely habitat degradation and competition/predation by introduced species.
Ptychochromoides itasy faces severe threats from habitat degradation in Madagascar's freshwater systems, particularly through sedimentation and pollution from agricultural runoff and deforestation in surrounding watersheds. The species is also threatened by competition and hybridization with introduced tilapia species, which have become established in many Malagasy water bodies. Dam construction and water extraction for irrigation further fragment and degrade the limited river systems where this endemic cichlid persists.
Habitat
This endemic Malagasy cichlid inhabits freshwater river systems and associated wetlands in the Itasy region of Madagascar's central highlands. The species requires clean, well-oxygenated waters with rocky or sandy substrates typical of Madagascar's highland river ecosystems.
