Psydrax pergracilis
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Psydrax pergracilis faces severe pressure from agricultural expansion and urban development across its limited range in East Africa. The species' specialized habitat requirements make it particularly vulnerable to forest fragmentation, as remaining populations become increasingly isolated in small forest patches. Overgrazing by livestock in adjacent areas further degrades the forest edges where this shrub typically establishes.
Habitat
This endemic shrub occurs in montane forest understories and forest edges at elevations between 1,200-2,100 meters in the Eastern Arc Mountains. It typically grows in well-drained soils within humid forest environments, often associated with other endemic plant species in these biodiversity hotspot forests.
