Psychotria schaeferi
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Psychotria schaeferi faces severe threats from ongoing deforestation and habitat fragmentation within its extremely limited range in Puerto Rico's montane forests. Agricultural expansion and urban development continue to reduce the remaining forest patches where this endemic coffee family shrub persists. The species' restricted distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to localized disturbances, with climate change potentially altering the specific microclimatic conditions required for its survival.
Habitat
This endemic shrub inhabits the understory of montane wet forests in Puerto Rico, typically found in shaded areas with high humidity and well-drained soils. It occurs at elevations between 400-800 meters in remnant forest patches of the Cordillera Central.
