Pandanus thomensis
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Pandanus thomensis faces severe pressure from habitat destruction as São Tomé's forests are cleared for agriculture and development. The species' limited distribution makes it particularly vulnerable to localized threats, while invasive plant species compete for resources in its native forest habitats. Climate change poses an additional long-term threat through altered rainfall patterns and increased storm intensity affecting the island's fragile ecosystems.
Habitat
This endemic pandanus occurs in the primary and secondary forests of São Tomé Island, typically found in humid lowland and montane forest environments. It grows in the understory and forest edges where it can access adequate moisture and filtered sunlight.
