Pancheria multijuga
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Pancheria multijuga faces severe pressure from nickel mining operations across New Caledonia's ultramafic substrates, which directly destroy its specialized habitat. The species' extremely restricted range on serpentine soils makes it particularly vulnerable to habitat fragmentation from mining expansion. Fire regimes altered by human activity pose additional threats to remaining populations, while the species' slow growth and limited dispersal ability hinder natural recovery.
Habitat
This endemic New Caledonian shrub is restricted to ultramafic soils derived from serpentine and peridotite substrates in the island's mountainous regions. It typically occurs in low shrubland and maquis vegetation on metalliferous soils between 200-800 meters elevation.
