Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Neocallitropsis pancheri faces severe pressure from mining activities, particularly nickel extraction, which directly destroys its ultramafic habitat in New Caledonia. Fire events, both natural and human-induced, pose additional threats to remaining populations, as this slow-growing conifer has limited regeneration capacity. Habitat fragmentation from infrastructure development and invasive plant species further compromise the integrity of its restricted range.
Habitat
This endemic New Caledonian conifer occurs exclusively on ultramafic soils derived from serpentine and peridotite substrates in montane shrublands and open forests. It typically grows at elevations between 400-1,200 meters on nutrient-poor, metal-rich soils that support specialized plant communities adapted to these harsh edaphic conditions.
