Ocotea cryptocarpa
Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Ocotea cryptocarpa faces severe pressure from deforestation and habitat fragmentation across its limited range in Central American cloud forests. Agricultural expansion, particularly cattle ranching and coffee cultivation, has eliminated much of its montane forest habitat. The species' restricted elevational range makes it particularly vulnerable to climate change impacts, as warming temperatures force suitable habitat upslope into increasingly smaller areas.
Habitat
Ocotea cryptocarpa inhabits montane cloud forests and humid tropical forests at elevations between 1,200-2,400 meters. The species requires the consistent moisture and cool temperatures characteristic of these high-elevation ecosystems, typically growing in areas with frequent fog and high humidity.
