Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Ochrosia borbonica faces severe pressure from habitat destruction as coastal and lowland forests in Mauritius and Réunion are cleared for agriculture and urban development. Invasive plant species compete aggressively with native vegetation, displacing this endemic tree from its preferred habitats. The species' limited distribution across just two islands makes it particularly vulnerable to localized threats and extreme weather events.
Habitat
This endemic tree occurs in coastal forests and lowland woodland areas of Mauritius and Réunion, typically growing in well-drained soils near the coast. It prefers partially shaded environments within native forest remnants at elevations from sea level to approximately 300 meters.
