Overview
A detailed profile for this species is sourced from the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species as assessments become available.
Nepenthes spectabilis faces severe pressure from habitat destruction as Sumatran montane forests are cleared for agriculture and palm oil plantations. The species' restricted range on Mount Talang and surrounding peaks makes it particularly vulnerable to localized threats. Collection for the international carnivorous plant trade has intensified pressure on wild populations, with specimens commanding high prices among collectors due to their spectacular pitcher coloration.
Habitat
This carnivorous pitcher plant inhabits montane forests and forest margins at elevations between 1,400-2,100 meters on Mount Talang and adjacent peaks in West Sumatra. It typically grows as an epiphyte or terrestrial plant in mossy, humid conditions along ridges and in cloud forest environments.
